Yu Zhang was born in Eastern China in 1979. Her childhood had been enriched with experiences in Chinese traditional arts. In 1997, she was introduced to the world of oil paintings at Nanjing University of the Arts. There she learned to express her state of mind with different tools and materials and these practices of methods strengthened her creative thinking. After finishing her M.A. and five years working as a senior lecturer at different universities, she started her PhD in 2012 at Eindhoven University of Technology on the Design of Interactive Installations. During this period, her research work focused on investigating the approaches to design interactive art installations that can bridge artist intent and audience experience. Meanwhile, her interactive artworks featured in both narrativity based on theories of drama and interactivity based on novel interactive technologies. In 2017, she received her doctoral degree and launched STUDIO Ü in the Netherlands to further explore new forms of interactive art and design by incorporating technology, complexity, and cross-mediated creative approaches.
